Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, served as Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893, and he is best known for the donation of North America's oldest sporting trophy. This signature originates from a circa 1878 commission document featuring Lord Stanley signing as "Fred Stanley", with Prince George also signing (Duke of Cambridge, George was a grandson of George III and cousin of Queen Victoria. The Duke was a head of British Army, serving as Commander-in-Chief of The Forces). At 2" x 3 1/4" and on somewhat firm off-white stock, both fountain pen signatures display beautifully, with George over Stanley, with his flared "E" loop and bottom of the "G" making contact with the Stanley signature. The reverse has residue and was likely removed from a scrapbook. The British military commission documents at the time were signed by Prince George as a Commander-in-Chief and countersigned by Lord Stanley as a Secretary Of State for War.
It is accompanied by the signature of Prince George, Duke of Cambridge, a male-line grandson of George III and cousin of Queen Victoria. The Duke was a head of British Army ( Commander-in-Chief of The Forces) .
The signatures were clipped from the commission document (c.1878). The army commission documents were signed by Prince George as a Commander-in-Chief and countersigned by Lord Stanley as a Secretary Of State for War.
