Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Fall 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/20/2022
Rumored to have been donated due to the violent play of notorious blueliner and arch-villain Sprague Cleghorn, Evelyn Byng, Viscountess Byng of Vimy, created the trophy that bears her name to be awarded for gentlemanly play. As a long devoted fan of the Ottawa Senators along with her husband, Lady Byng wanted to encourage and reward good sportsmanship. Authoring her memoirs while residing for safety issues in Canada during the Second World War, we offer a copy of her hardcover work Up the Stream of Time that has been signed. Published in 1945, the 274-page book has been signed by Byng on the title page in blue ink, with the signature flawless. The book itself shows light wear including fading to the boards – especially the spine, with glue residue visible on the first page, as there was likely a bookplate originally affixed. An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany.
