Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016

Trailing behind only George Armstrong for the most all-time games played by a Maple Leaf, Tim Horton once held the most consecutive games played record for defencemen when he donned the blue and white unabridged from February 11 1961 to February 4 1968, seeing action in 486 consecutive contests. This Toronto Maple Leafs alternate captain’s jersey was worn by the legend in 1968-69, and it’s been photo-matched! This season was particularly important in Horton’s career as it was his second last played in Ontario, where he finished the year with a career high 40 points in 74 games played. Not too shabby for a 39 year old defenceman playing in his 17th full NHL season.
General Athletic Products laundry tagging remains affixed but somewhat detached to the inner seam, with no labeling present along the collar. Featuring the classic Leafs team crest that’s been partially embroidered, the vintage tie-neck garment has also been accented with tackle twill sleeve and back numbers along with the alternate captain’s “A”. A dated photo of Horton from early in the 1969-70 season shows him wearing a different alternate captain's "A", which leads us to believe the jersey is from the 1968-69 season. A few light stains are present on the lower front band and over the left elbow, with heavy pilling to the interior around the shoulder sections. There is also some puckering to the interior behind the team crest and numbers, with approx. 18 team repairs scattered about. Examples are located on the lower front and back hems, the reverse lower striping band and on both sleeves, including larger repairs near the left and right elbow sections.
The jersey has been photo-matched to the alternate captain's "A", particularly to the lose thread on the left bottom side, and to the slightly tilted placement of the lower left bottom portion of the "A". It has also been photo-matched to the team crest, particularly to the extra amount of sewing thread on the lower right edge of the crest, and to the same exact placement of the lettering "Toronto Maple Leafs" along with a few other specific crest details, and to the two team repairs to the right (middle and above) of the #7 on the right sleeve. Also visible on both photo-match images are the team repairs on the sleeves, with others added afterwards. Both photo-match numeric images will be included. This important jersey worn by Tim Horton was originally obtained from Maple Leafs' physiotherapist Karl Elieff.
