Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
First seeing use in the National League in 1941, batting helmets have actually existed since the turn-of-the-century, with leather examples first worn including by Roger Bresnahan circa-1908. We have a trio of batting helmets offered, with a pair of Jays helmets worn by Kevin Pillar in 2017, along with an example that was used by Russell Martin in 2015. For the Pillar's examples, one Jays helmet is in blue and white with a Jays decal over the front (used April 11th), the other solid red with a maple leaf decal across the front (used May 28th), with Rawlings and MLB Authentic labels affixed within each along with 7 1/8 sizing and “11” over each reverse. Both show nice use, with surface marks and scratches, with a large surface abrasion over the top section on the solid red helmet. The Russell helmet is in solid blue with a Jays decal over the front and “55” over the reverse along with a “2015 Postseason” decal, with Rawlings and MLB Authentic labels within the interior. Heavy wear is present throughout, with damage and cracking along the top section. All three helmet also sports holograms over the reverse. As an added bonus, we also have Kevin Pillar’s locker nameplate from April 12th 2017, with a Jays logo on the left and “Let’s Rise” over the right. The 3” x 24” plate remains in wonderful condition, with an MLB hologram affixed along the lower left.
Addendum; The Kevin Pillar game-used red helmet from May 28th is now photo-matched to the black mark on the front of the helmet. The Russell Martin helmet is a game-used helmet and is now also photo-matched to a number of marks on the side of the helmet to the post-season and it was used in the regular season as well. All helmets were worn in multiple games.
