Splitting goaltending duties with the Chicago Black Hawks’ Tony Esposito, Ken Dryden would see action in four of the eight Summit Series matches against the Soviets in 1972, victorious in a pair of games including the pivotal series-winning Game 8. This stick was used at the tournament by the superstar, and it has been team-signed by members of Team Canada. A Sher-Wood model with “Dryden” stamped, there is a date stamp along the edge of the paddle of “4 Jul. 1972", with the white tape intact over the knob and a portion of the original black tape on the blade remaining. Nice game-use is exhibited with wear to the blade including the underside, with marks to the paddle and red paint transfer on the paddle and shaft. Approx 17 have signed a shaved-down side of the shaft including White, Bergman, Parise, Clarke, Harris, Tallon, Mikita, Seiling, Johnston, P Mahovlich, Glennie, T Esposito and a few others.
The majority of the signatures are heavily faded with some hard to decipher, with the Esposito, Glennie and Mahovlich dark and bold. It should also be noted that there is some age spotting on the underside of the shaft as well as chipping to the blade, including along the toe section and top edge. Most of the striping accents are also intact. We should further note that Billy Harris was one of three junior players that practiced with the team before they left for Europe (along with John Van Boxmeer and Michel Larocque) so his inclusion as a signer should put use of the stick to training camp before the tournament, but the possibility exists of use within the Summit Series matches, as the stick could have been signed sometime later.
