Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
Already a Stanley Cup champion during his rookie season in the National Hockey League tending the goal for the famed bleu, blanc et rouge of the Montreal Canadiens, Ken Dryden would win the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's top rookie for the 1971-72 season and follow up the award winning campaign with a '72-'73 season that would see him lead the Canadiens to another Stanley Cup with a record of 33-7-13 in 54 games played, earning him the first Vezina Trophy of his career as well. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982, offered here is this stick used by Dryden. A Sher-Wood made offering with "Dryden K." and his number "29" stamped to the upper shaft, the stick retains its original tape job of black cloth tape job over the blade and white-over-black on the handle/knob. Featuring a pair of intact accent stickers at the top and bottom of the paddle, the underside of which features a date stamp reading "29 MAR 1973" that remains easy to make out and means the stick was probably wielded by Dryden during the playoffs that started on April 4th. Displaying with moderate game-wear throughout including puck marks over both sides of the paddle and blade tape, red post paint transfer marks are observed over the upper shaft as well. With some tears present to the underside of the blade tape as well, some light wear is seen near the heel of the stick along with a crack in the bottom of the blade that does not affect the structurability of the stick whatsoever.
