Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2016

A long-time analyst and colour-commentator, Kelly Hrudey spent his entire 15 year career in only three cities, with San Jose, Los Angeles and New York. This helmet was worn by Hrudey while with the Islanders in his rookie season of 1984-85, and it’s been photo-matched. A Jofa model, the helmet retains its complete interior padding and strapping, along with the original face-mask. Featuring large New York team decals on the front and both sides along with striping accents in Islanders colours, there is also “30” on the reverse in large two-tone numbers. Notable game-use is abundant, with numerous marks and abrasions present on both the helmet and cage, along with transparent tape used to reinforce some of the decals.
The work of mask painter Jim Kwilos, it was originally obtained from Mr. Kwilos who in turn received it from Hrudey after its tenure of use. As mentioned, the mask has been photo-matched. Getty image # 147541811 from the Eastern Division Semi-Finals (Hrudey’s playoffs debut!) has been matched to a few faint scratches on the right ear side, and to the small black mark in the "I" of Islanders on the same side.
