The crowing event of the 1981 calendar year throughout the mighty British Empire, the wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer took place as the world watched, on July 29th, 1981. Produced to commemorate the historic nuptials, centuries-old Wilkinson Sword crafted a wonderful keepsake in the form of a highly attractive and especially well detailed sword. Only 1000 examples were produced, with limited distribution, as 100 swords each made their way to both Canada and Australia, with the remaining 800 staying put in the UK. At 39” from tip to pommel, the double-edged diamond-shaped blade feature’s an etched floral motif and family crests, with heart-shaped cross-guard with additional raised floral pattern and mounted gold crest. Utilizing a split knuckle bow and gold-coloured finial pommel, fine Birmingham enameled crests of both families have been placed above, with "To Commemorate the Marriage of The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer-29 July 1981" etched across the blade.
Originally sold for $1500.00 in 1981, the limited-edition number of “0045” has been stamped into the underside edge of the blade just above the cross-guard, with the Wilkinson Sword particulars listed above the hilt on the etched side of the blade, including “By appointment to her majesty Queen Elizabeth II”. A silver sword knot has also been used, with the couples names each appearing over one of the split bow sections in raised letters. The sword remains in gorgeous condition, with some visible surface wear over the blade, cross-guard, bow and pommel. It should also be noted that the heart-shaped cross-guard appears to have been placed slightly off-center.
