Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
Named by Canadian Forces as the greatest Canadian military athletes of the 20th century in 2001, the Ottawa RCAF Flyers were Olympic gold medal winners when they represented Canada at the 1948 games in St. Moritz. This lot contains a jersey worn by Julius “Pete” Leichnitz in the 20th anniversary reunion game that took place in 1968, with the jersey being a replica (not exact) of the sweaters the RCAF wore in the 1948 Olympics. Accompanying the jersey is the perfect companion piece for display, with an original mounted photo of the team from the very reunion game this jersey was worn in, with “20th Anniversary” above, and “1948 – RCAF Flyers – 1968” just below. An LOA from the Leichnitz family will be included.
Tagging from Albion Knit is attached to the inside seam, with the tie-neck jersey featuring a heat-pressed team logo and felt “15” sewn on verso. With dual sleeve, chest and lower front striping bands, the garment also utilizes long knit cuffs. Remaining in excellent condition with no unsightly damage, there are a few light stains present, most notably on the lower front beneath the team logo as well as on and around the left shoulder section. The accompanying team photo is approx. 7 ¾” x 9 ¼” and it’s been twice mounted, first on a thin mount with the members listed below, than on a thicker and larger cardboard mount to total dimensions of roughly 12” x 13”. The photo exhibits a large crease that runs through the mount, with the bottom right corner loose. There are also additional creases to the mount, along with corner wear.
