Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
The New York Rangers all-time franchise record holder for most career assists by a goaltender, John Vanbiesbrouck spent almost two decades guarding NHL creases, with the 1986 Vezina Trophy winner also ranked second overall for most career victories among American-born goaltenders. Originally produced for Vanbiesbrouck and displayed at Simmons Sports store, we have a mask made by Jerry Wright, but the design wasn’t accepted by the star netminder and was never worn. Manufactured by Itech and featuring the original cage, strapping and interior padding, a panther skull dominates the top section, with the mask being torn through over each side. “34 Vanbiesbrouck” appears over the back plate, with a sticker over the interior from artist Brian Stevens, along with a second label from Jerry Wright.
There is a bit of surface wear present along with a few small chips on edges, with the mask displaying beautifully. We should note that Jerry Wright is the original designer of Itech masks. When his Wright Masks company was sold to Itech, he continued making masks for Itech.
