The Jean Beliveau Auction- February 2005
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/22/2005
The Montreal Canadiens' sometimes "forgotten dynasty" of 4 Stanley Cups in 5 years got underway in 1965 as they beat the Maple Leafs in 5 semi-final games before edging the Black Hawks in 7. Jean Beliveau scored what proved to be the Cup-winning goal when he lit the lamp just 14 seconds into the deciding game as the Habs went on to a 4-0 shutout on Forum ice. With 8 goals and 8 assists in 13 playoff games, Beliveau captured the inaugural Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the playoffs. One of the most impressive NHL individual awards, with a replica of Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens in front of a large leaf, this personal miniature was produced in recent years by Boffey, the same company that supplies trophies to the NHL. The bottom part of the 3-tier wooden base measures 9 1/2" x 7 1/2" while the leaf rises to just under 15". The engraved plaque below MLG explains the award while another beneath it reads "Jean Beliveau - Montreal Canadiens - 1965". The trophy is in striking mint condition. Beliveau's performance was a great way to respond to the media's and some so-called fans' critisisms which began back in 1962 and which questioned Beliveau's mental stability, his apparent fragility and ultimately whether he should retire. Sorry folks, he still had another 4 Stanley Cups to be a major part of! This formidable trophy will be accompanied by Jean Beliveau's classy autograph at the bottom of a letter of authenticity.
