Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2020
One of the absolute finest and most desirable Stanley Cup championship rings ever offered in the history of the hobby, this striking and thought-provoking memento was originally presented to iconic superstar Jean Beliveau after the Montreal Canadiens won their fourth consecutive Stanley Cup, and it presents advanced championship ring collectors with a very rare opportunity. The 1958-59 season saw the Habs take first place with Dickie Moore and Beliveau finishing one-two in the scoring race. Beliveau's 45 goals, including career #200, led the league while Jacques Plante won the Vezina trophy, Tom Johnson the Norris and Ralph Backstrom the Calder. In the playoffs, Montreal was pushed to 6 games by Chicago before taking care of Toronto in a 5-game final, Marcel Bonin scoring the Cup-winning goal. The 1959 Stanley Cup rings were the first ones ever presented to the players in the history of the Canadiens and less than a handful have ever been offered for public sale. Size 9 ½, the face features a raised image of Lord Stanley's trophy which has the four Cup-winning years listed on the bands of the barrel. Encompassing are the words Canadiens' fans of the era never got tired of hearing, "World Hockey Champions". The Habs logo appears on one shank with "Jean Beliveau" engraved on a banner above. The NHL shield is on the opposite shank with "1956" and "1958" above and "1959" beneath. "Balfour" and "10K" are stamped on the interior of the band. Exhibiting wear over the outer band from use including numerous scratches, there is additional wear to the inner band, with a few minor dings visible along edges. Originally acquired directly from Jean Beliveau with a family LOA to be included, please take note that this gorgeous ring may be subject to a silent reserve.
