Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - June 2009
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2009
Members of the 20th century's first hockey dynasty along with team management are presented in an array of individual cabinet photos with Lord Stanley’s grail in the place of honour at the center. By the end of the 1905 hockey season, the Ottawa Silver Seven had been holders of the Stanley Cup for 2 years and would not surrender it until December of the following year. The famous Dawson City challenge had occurred in January of 1905, while Ottawa edged Rat Portage 2-games-to-1 in March in defense of their title. The gigantic master photo display measures in at a whopping 39 x 49 inches including the vintage wooden frame. Painted hand embellishments decorate the oval portraits and a wonderful and classic artwork at the center captures an on-ice scene. A hoard of Hall-of-Famers are counted among the roster including Harry Westwick, Billy Gilmour, the great Frank McGee and team captain Harvey Pulford with a larger image of fellow HOFer Alf Smith at the very bottom center. Twelve players are featured in total in their wondrous striped wool sweaters with another even dozen dapper-attired team staffers above. This one-of-a-kind master photo, no doubt crafted in order to produce smaller presentation photographs, is an astonishing find and has been preserved in excellent condition for over 100 years! Truly a piece that belongs in a Hall-of-Fame-worthy collection.
