This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/21/2017
A prelude of what was to come, Wayne Gretzky’s first coach remarked that at age 6, Wayne was handling the puck better than his 10 year old teammates. Originating from his early formative years, we have a “Hespeler Minor Olympics Scoring Champion” Pee-Wee Division perpetual trophy that was awarded to a 12 year old Wayne Gretzky for his 35 points in 7 games, and this is accompanied by programs from 1969-70 and 1971-72, both having Gretzky in them before he was a pee-wee, along with a few other assorted modern items including papers researching a youthful Wayne. At 10” x 13”, the wooden shield plaque features a centralized mounted player, with a plaque beneath listing the particulars, along with assorted mini plaques listing past winners including “Wayne Gretzky Brantford 1973”. A pair of maple leaves were also affixed along the top (one is now missing), with the mounted player’s stick also missing.
**Addendum - We should also note that this very Hespeler Minor Olympics Pee-Wee trophy was also previously won by four-time Stanley Cup champion John Tonelli, with his name listed on one of the affixed plaque's on the left side, stating it was won by the superstar in 1969 while he was just 12 years old.
With moderate wear to both the wooden and mini affixed plaques, the award remains in very good condition otherwise, with some additional light wear to the reverse. The 1969-70 and 1971-72 programs both list Gretzky in the line-up for Brantford, and they both remain in very good condition with expected handling wear. Also included along with the aforementioned research papers are the small pictorial Wayne Gretzky book by Richard Brenner, A Tribute from Home featuring Gretzky family images, a Shreddies box from 1999 picturing a young Wayne and 5 different hockey cards from the late 1990s that all feature Gretzky during his youth.
