“Do you believe in miracles? Yes!” That is how ABC Sports broadcaster Al Michaels described the final seconds of Team USA’s truly miraculous 4-3 win over the powerhouse Soviet Union team at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics. The young Americans, under the guidance of head coach Herb Brooks, went on to win its final game against Finland to claim the Olympic gold medal on home ice during the heart of the Cold War. The United States’ win was a David-vs-Goliath story come to life and ABC’s Wide World of Sports recognized the underdog team’s incredible accomplishment. “United States Olympic Hockey Team ABC’s Wide World of Sports 1980 Athlete of the Year Award” reads this plaque, one of which was presented to each member of Team USA 1980. This is the one that was presented to Brooks, who died in a car accident in 2003, the year before the Disney movie “Miracle” about the team was released. Nicely preserved with a few marks to the edges, it comes with a signed LOA from Patti Brooks.
The simple wood plaque with “Herb Brooks” handwritten in marker on the reverse measures 15” x 12” and displays the previously mentioned text engraved on a 1” x 5” gold-colored metal plaque in the middle attached by one tiny screw on each end. The top of the wood plaque features a 6” x 8 1/2" photo of Team USA huddled in an on-ice celebration covered with a layer of clear hard plastic attached to the wood plaque by a tiny screw in each of its four corners. The bottom of the plaque has a recessed opening that measures roughly 4 1/2” x 5” with the ABC Wide World of Sports crest that famously worn on the left breast jacket pocket of such renowned broadcasters as Jim McKay, Howard Cosell, Brent Musburger, Keith Jackson, Curt Gowdy, and Michaels, himself, displayed on a black velour background.
