Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
The Calder Memorial winner as the NHL’s top rookie in 1952-53, netminder Gump Worsley won four Stanley Cups during his lengthy career. The HOFer also played in four All-Star Games including 1961, 1962, 1965 and 1972. Hailing from his final appearance that showcased the NHL’s best, we have a West Division All-Stars jersey that was worn by the Gumper in the 1972 NHL All-Star Game, along with an 11” x 14” photo from the event signed by both Bobby Hull (dated 1972) and trainer Lou Varga. A Gerry Cosby label graces the inside hem with “50” size tag and “68” year swatch, with six eyelet configuration on tie-neck construction. Styled with tri-colour tackle twill “1” over the front, sleeves and verso, layered white and red stars have been placed above each breast, with “Worsley” across the nameplate in single white twill. A signed LOA from Worsley will accompany.
Used in a number of All-Star Games through the late-1960s and early-1970's, evidence of a former nameplate is present, with the only other player to wear #1 for the West Division All-Stars Glenn Hall in 1969, with research showing that the jersey would have most likely been worn by him as well. With just a few dark marks visible over the front band and number, the jersey remains in wonderful condition. The accompanying 11” x 14” black and white photo pictures Gump in this jersey along with Bobby Hull, centered by trainer Lou Varga, with each adding ballpoint signatures and inscriptions addressed to Worsley. Heavy creasing is present especially along the base, with light staining to the reverse.
