On the radar of the Belleville McFarlands as they prepared to descend upon Europe to compete for the 1959 World Championships representing Canada, Red Berenson had just completed a pair of successful seasons in the SJHL with Regina, which included leading them to the Memorial Cup finals. On the strength of Red’s tournament-leading 13 points – including 9 goals - the McFarlands captured the title, winning Canada’s eighteenth World Championship. Hailing from his personal collection, we have the wool McFarlands’ sweater Red wore throughout the tournament, along with in the 23 European exhibition games that were played both before and after.
A partially detached Albion Knit label sits affixed to the collar (size 50), with no other tagging present. Featuring a detailed blue felt maple leaf team crest with “Canada” arching above in matching material, “12” encompassed by “Belleville” and “McFarlands” in layered red felt with black trim resides over the reverse. Alternating black and red striping bands over the sleeves and waist have also been utilized, with four eyelet configuration on tie-neck construction. Displaying deep and vibrant colours, the off-white wool exhibits a number of small holes throughout, with slightly larger examples at the right armpit and near the left elbow. With just these minor imperfections, the garment survives in beautiful condition. A signed LOA from Red Berenson will accompany this historically important sweater.
