Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
A historic piece of racing memorabilia, we have a vintage Simpson race suit that was worn by legendary Canadian driver Gilles Villeneuve during testing and/or practice for Ferrari in 1980. The suit was then gifted to Villeneuve-sponsored Honda Series driver and friend Gaetan St-Louis, and racing under the "Auto Gilles Villeneuve" sponsorship, had the suit patched (now removed) with his own sponsorship advertising. A small pic of him wearing this very suit is included, along with a 1981 French-language newspaper clipping that mentions him using a suit from Villeneuve’s previous season, with an image of the Honda he was racing. A pair of detailed Simpson labels grace the collar along with a date tag of “5/80”, with a “Simpson Safety Equipment” crest affixed over the upper left sleeve. In solid beige and featuring the Marlboro chevron design, the suit shows nice use with scuff marks present, along with some rust-coloured staining over the left sleeve. A detailed letter of provenance will accompany, along with additional documentation.
A copy of the original bill of sale from 1996 from Gaetan St-Louis, which mentions a number of other Villeneuve items, is also included. Lastly, a December 1980 copy of Grand Prix International magazine showing Villeneuve wearing this suit (not photo-matched) is included, as well as a few small photos.
