The Ottawa Rough Riders began a whole new chapter of their storied existence in 1970. Gone was legendary head coach Frank Clair, who had led the Russ Jackson’s Rough Riders to a second straight Grey Cup the previous season while winning his second Annis Stukis Trophy as the CFL’s coach of the year. Ottawa’s new head coach was Jack Gotta, who would go on to be named coach of the year in 1972 and 1973, the latter season capped with a Grey Cup win. On the 1970 staff was assistant coach George Brancato, who would take over from Gotta as head coach in 1974, and go on to win the Annis Stukis Trophy in 1975 and the Grey Cup in 1976. Offered from George Brancato’s personal collection is his 1970 Ottawa Rough Riders gold and diamond team ring. “Ottawa Rough Riders” is spelled out on the bezel surrounding the tableau featuring a football helmed with a diamond set in the upper part of the “R” for Rough Riders. The left shank features a CFL helmet logo while “G. Brancato” is stamped on a banner at the top of the right shank, with “H.C.” and “1970” below it. Original gold and diamond creation weighs about 16 grams with “Jostens 10K” stamped inside the ring’s size 11 band. Smoothing of the lettering on the bezel and surface scratches display that the ring was worn with plenty of Rough Riders pride. Comes with George Brancato’s signed letter of authenticity.
