Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022

Teaming with Rogie Vachon to form one of the NHL’s best goaltender tandems during the early-to-mid-1970s, Gary Edwards first backstopped the Los Angeles Kings in 1971-72, and after parts of six season in California, moved on to Cleveland. Pairs of seasons would be spent with the Barons and Minnesota North Stars, with his final 31 regular-season NHL contests shared amongst three clubs over two seasons. This historic fiberglass mask was worn by Edwards spanning a good portion of his career, approx from 1976-77 to 1980-81. Obtained directly from Edwards and first donned with the Kings during his final season in Los Angeles in 1976-77 (he played 10 regular-season games), the mask was originally painted in Kings colours (purple and gold, with remnants visible within the interior), and was then worn by Edwards immediately after his trade to Cleveland with the Kings paint scheme before the mask was later painted white. Joining the Edmonton Oilers for the 1980-81 NHL season, Edwards had noted mask magician Greg Harrison paint an Oilers colour scheme (currently present on mask) and used the mask as a back-up. According to information we received, on Feb 15, 1981, the mask made its only NHL appearance for the Oilers, in a 2-2 tie vs Buffalo. Sporting none of the original strapping, the interior padding remains intact, with good surface wear present throughout, including marks and abrasions to both the interior and exterior. There is also some salting of the clasps, chipping to the material at the chin, and crazing to the surface over the right eye socket.
