A veteran of over 1,100 NHL contests throughout the late-1960s to early-1980s, Gary Unger set a then-NHL “Iron Man” record of 914 consecutive games, from February 24, 1968, to December 21, 1979. Best remembered as a member of the St Louis Blues – spending the majority of the 1970s with the club, Unger captained the squad in 1976-77, and we offer a Blues captain’s jersey worn by the Calgary native during the era. Rawlings labeling with “50” sizing and handwritten “7” is affixed to the collar, with a customized loop-style fight strap. Styled with the classic blue note team crest in layered tackle twill, “7” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in matching material. There is evidence of a former captain’s “C”, but no clear evidence of a former TV nameplate (there is a small spot near the upper right of the reverse “7” possibly showing remaining threads). The jersey was most likely worn by Unger in 1975-76 while serving as team captain when Barclay Plager was out of the line-up, with the possibility of the jersey being worn by Unger in 1976-77 as team captain.
Exhibiting wear to the material throughout with a few random marks visible, there are also numerous material pulls over the front and sleeves, with red paint transfer over the lower reverse. Interior pilling is also visible along with team repairs, with example situated on the front (3), reverse (3) and sleeves (2). An included digital image shows the proper placement of the numbers on the sleeves, the team crest and placement of the former captain's "C", with the team repair on the lower edge of the "7" also appearing, but the image does not provide high enough resolution to call a definitive photo-match.
