Capturing their fifth Stanley Cup over the short span of seven years, the Edmonton Oilers of the Eighties ensured their status as a hockey dynasty. The players and management of the 1989-90 Championship team were forced to make room in their trophy cases for yet another of these silver plate replicas of Lord Stanley's Cup. Oilers goalie Bill Ranford claimed the Conn Smythe Trophy and captain Mark Messier hoisted the Cup in the wake of a five-game win over Boston in the final for Edmonton’s fifth title in seven years. Produced by Boffey, this Stanley Cup trophy is similar to those awarded to each member of the winning team by the National Hockey League in a tradition dating back to 1958. Displaying the players names engraved in three columns, headed up by Messier and including fellow HOFers Kurri, Anderson and Fuhr, below those of owner Peter Pocklington, GM Glen Sather, coach John Muckler and the rest of the team’s executives and staff. While the original version of the trophy had green felt on the underside of the black wood base, this example sports brown felt. There is surface oxidation present along with a few blemishes, but no large dents or damage.
