Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2017

The next best thing to having an actual Wayne Gretzky Stanley Cup championship ring is this amazing 10-karat gold salesman's sample made up in The Great One's name after he claimed his fourth and final title to cap the 1987-88 season. This rare salesman's sample ring has zirconias on the tableau and is otherwise quite identical to the ones that were presented to those members of the Oilers dynasty team of the Eighties. "1988 Stanley Cup Champions" is displayed in raised gold on the bezel surrounding the dazzling tableau which features four substantial zirconias set into a bed of smaller shimmering stones. The blue and orange enameled Oilers logo is featured between "Gretzky" and "99" on the left shank, while the right shank displays "Oilers" along the top with the team's championship seasons listed on four Stanley Cups displayed below. "Balfour 10K" is stamped inside the size 9 ½ band, with a weight of approx. 32 grams.
Moderate wear is present on the desirable sample ring, with numerous scratches and minute gouges along edges, along with considerable wear to the bottom of the band. Additional wear including scratches are present along the face and shanks, but these imperfections do little to detract from the ring’s obvious aesthetic qualities.
