Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2020
Game-worn items originating from the formative years of noteworthy Hall of Fame players rarely surface, and we offer just that, with a photo-matched blocker used by superstar Ed Belfour during the 1989-90 Stanley Cup playoffs, paired with a glove that saw action circa 1990-91. The blocker was produced by Miller, with the original Miller label over the front now gone but the outline visible, with the original tie string also lost. The glove is a Great Saves Belfour custom model in Hawks colours, with a large “Belfour Custom Model” label over the wrist padding. Hailing from early in the career of one of the modern era’s greatest goalkeepers, both items originate from Belfour’s personal collection, with his signed LOA to accompany.
Showing nice use with a number of puck marks across the front, there is also light pilling to the reverse, along with wear to the palm. Getty Image #974190550 has been matched to the two black marks within the white border on the upper edge of the blocker, and to the loose white material visible nearby. We should also note that Getty incorrectly identified the image used as being from the 1989-90 regular season, with this impossible as Belfour only saw playoffs action in 1989-90. It should be further noted that Ed’s 1990-91 Bowman rookie card is showing him wearing this blocker, with the aforementioned two black marks on the top edge showing. The glove also exhibits nice use, with puck marks over the pocket section, and light fraying to the material in spots. There is also some rusting/salting to a few of the grommets.
