Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2016
From his second of three seasons in Ontario, we have Ed Belfour’s custom-crafted game-worn Warwick goalie mask that’s been photo-matched. The interior padding is present including added velcro for cloth forehead accessory, and dual-colour strapping to coincide with the placement of the custom graphics. The manufacturer’s labels remain affixed on the inside chin section, with added stickers from Warwick as well as artwork designer Ray Bishop. Ed’s Trademark majestic eagles grace each side, with his customary “Make-a-Wish Foundation” design over the chin. The back head-piece has additional custom graphics showcasing a 1941 Willys for Ed’s racing company, named after his Carman Manitoba hometown. There is some chipping and flaking to the paint, but just along a few minor edges as well as the tip of the chin. An LOA from Ed Belfour will accompany this lot.
As previously mentioned, this mask has been photo-matched. 2 different Getty images show matches, including a September 13th 2003 image to the red marks on the left ear side. This image was taken while practicing for the 2003 NHL Challenge in Sweden. The second match comes from a November 27th 2003 image showing the chip on the right side of the chin, as well as the red marks on the left ear side. This image was taken from a game vs Atlanta, won by Toronto 3-1. The cage on the helmet is the correct type for when Belfour used it, but it looks like it might have been changed at some point, with the attachment clips at top removed and not included. The mask will also be accompanied by its original custom carrying case, made by Warwick goalie masks in Port Huron Michigan.
