Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
Traditionally one of hockey’s greatest honours, the awarding of the Calder Memorial Trophy to the league’s top rookie began at the conclusion of the 1936-37 season, with Toronto’s Syl Apps the first recipient of the prized hardware. This Calder Memorial Trophy was awarded to HOF goaltender Ed Belfour in 1990-91, and it’s accompanied by its original presentation box. Standing at 13” in height, the metal trophy bowl sits perched atop a finished square wooden base, heavily chased with grape vine motifs. Engraved obverse text states in full, “Calder Memorial Trophy to be awarded annually to the player selected as the most proficient in the first year of competition in the National Hockey League”. With just heavy tarnishing present, the trophy remains in beautiful condition. We should also note that a sticker from maker Boffey is affixed to the felt underside, while the metal bowl currently swivels on its base. An LOA from Ed Belfour will accompany.
The accompanying box is roughly 6 ¼” x 6 ¼” x 13 ½” in solid black, with an NHL shield decal in red and silver affixed to the front. Some damage is present along an edge, but the box displays well despite this, especially when placed prominently near the trophy. Ed would finish his rookie campaign in style, winning the Vezina and William Jennings trophies along with the Calder.
