Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
Proudly displayed at Simmons Sports store and produced in the early-1980s by noted mask maker Ed Chubberly, we have a “bird cage” style mask, with these models widely adopted in the late-1970s after the Canadian Standards Association declared molded masks unsafe and began certifying only cage-style specimens. Featuring an attractive tiger design possibly influenced by the iconic mask of Gilles Gratton, the original cage, strapping and back plate are intact, with Chubberly’s trademark C’s cut into each side. The mask exhibits heavy wear with a number of scratches, marks and abrasions to the surface and along edges, with a few splits to the interior padding. Not produced for a specific player.
Chubberly produced masks for a number of professional goaltenders including Mike Richter, Tommy Soderstrom, Don Beaupre and Curtis Joseph. In February of 1977, a puck struck the eye of Gerry Desjardins, a goalie with the Buffalo Sabres, causing severe hemorrhaging. This event helped launch the movement in favor of the "bird-cage" style mask popularized in Europe by USSR goalie Vladislav Tretiak during the 1972 Canada-Russia “Summit Series”. The shift to helmet and cage was accelerated after the Flyers’ Bernie Parent suffered a career-ending eye injury when he was struck with an errant stick in 1979.
