Gaining his pre-NHL seasoning with his hometown Toronto Marlboros, Carl Brewer made his NHL debut with the blue and white in 1957-58, winning a trio of Stanley Cup championships with Toronto before moving on to the Canadian National team, in 1966. Originally displayed at Gee’s Bar & Restaurant in Toronto, we have a pair of gloves attributed to Carl Brewer, with the pair gifted to Gee’s owner George Eldridge directly by Brewer according to our consigner. Cooper models in Leafs blue with white accents, Toronto team supplier Doug Laurie appears screened onto each glove, with a cloth patch from the MLG business over the right glove. While no identifiers on the gloves directly link them to Brewer or the Leafs, an article from the 1959-60 season details Brewer’s particularity of cutting away the palms of his gloves, with this done to the palm of the offered left glove.
Exhibiting heavy use with considerable rubbing to the leather in spots, each palm also shows considerable use (the right sports a large hole, while the left has been cut away as previously mentioned), with separations to the seams along fingers. A business card from Gee’s presumably used to display the gloves is included, with “Carl Brewer Gloves” handwritten on the reverse.
