Earning the third-most Stanley Cup titles in NHL history, the Detroit Red Wings began life in 1926 with players purchased from the folded Victoria Cougar of the WHL, and would retain the Cougars moniker until 1930, ultimately becoming the Red Wings in 1932. This lot contains a great grouping of Red Wings team-issued press photos totaling approx 109, and ranging from the early-1950s, to 1975-76. With the majority glossy black and white prints in the 8” x 10” range, and highlighted by a collection of 17 photos from 1950-52 including Howe, Sawchuk (rookie era), Lindsay, Abel, Pronovost, Kelly, Adams and Tommy Ivan, we also have 14 photos from 1967-68 including Bergman and Prentice, 11 photos from 1976-77 including Grant and Polonich, 17 photos from 1971-72 including Dionne (rookie season), Bergman and Berenson, 19 colour photos from 1973-74 including Delvecchio (final season), Dionne, Berenson and Bergman, and 31 photos from 1975-76 including Giacomin, Rutherford, Harper, Redmond and McKechnie.
The rarely seen early-1950s photos display well, with each slightly “rolled” at each end, with pinholes and corner wear to the group. Most also sport the player’s name written over the reverse. The desirable paper stock colour photos from 1973-74 remain in high-grade, with the remaining photos all showing just light to moderate wear with the odd corner ding, crease or blemish.
