Finishing third overall on the strength of Gordie Howe’s team-leading 77 points, the Detroit Red Wings would lose in the 1957-58 semifinals to the powerful eventual Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens, with Terry Sawchuk playing every minute of the regular season and playoffs for the Motor City hopefuls. We have a highly desirable Detroit Red Wings alternate captain’s wool sweater that hails from the 1957-58 NHL season. With a mostly detached Lippmans label over the collar, the vintage garment measures-out to roughly a modern size 48. Featuring the classic winged-wheel Red Wings team crest with embroidered detailing, “15” appears over the sleeves and verso in single twill, with the alternate’s “A” in matching material situated over the right breast. We should note that the sweater is datable by the serif on the bottom of the reverse “1”, along with the horizontal middle section and triangle-shaped serif of the reverse “5”, with both features distinct to that particular season. Billy Dea, Don Poile and Dennis Olson all wore the number #15 sweater in 1957-58, and considering that Howe and Delvecchio were the alternate captain’s that season, the “A” was likely added later when the garment was recycled.
Surviving in wonderful condition with rich red colouration, there is pilling throughout, with a few small holes encompassing the alternate’s “A”, with single team repairs over each sleeve. There is also a bit of fraying to the threading along the alternate’s “A”, with the threading on the reverse “5” torn along a 1” section.
