One of the NHL’s most successful modern clubs, the Detroit Red Wings – on the strength of Steve Yzerman’s continuous leadership – advanced to each and every post-season between 1983-84 and 2015-16 except just two seasons, with a pair of Stanley Cup championships won since 2000. Endless legends have represented the Motor City’s iconic winged-wheel including Gordie Howe, Terry Sawchuk, Ted Lindsay, Sergei Fedorov and Chris Chelios. This lot contains a great Red Wings postcard and team card collection of approx 1,218, ranging from the 1940s, to 2001-02, with 134 examples signed. Highlighted by a few interesting items signed by Mr Hockey, this collection is a must for the Motown fan who needs everything.
The breakdown for the items by year is as follows. First, we have 10 6 ½” x 8 ½” prints of vintage images, with each affixed to a red 8 ½” x 11” backing including Roach, Lewis, Hay and others, 1947-48 – 13 postcards with facsimile signature reverses including Lindsay, Abel and Black Jack Stewart, 1948-49 – 18 postcards with facsimile signature reverses including Howe, Adams, Lumley, Abel and others, late-1940s – 3 exhibit cards (Howe, Lumley and Abel). The following lots appear to be vintage copies? And don’t appear to be team-issued, made from JD McCarthy postcards, on thin card stock, with 44 misc examples present, along with; 1940s – 16; 1951-52 – 2; 1954-55 – 13; 1955-56 – 11; 1956-57 – 10. The following lots appear to be possibly team-issued, with high quality images, with each on Kodak photo stock including 1957-58 – 18; 1958-59 – 33; 1960-61 – 16; misc (some appear to be homemade) – 40. Next, 1950s to early-1980s – 395 JD McCarthy postcards including 94 signed with the signed examples to include Howe (2), Abel, Arbour, Bergman, Bucyk, Delvecchio, Edwards, Gadsby, Glover, Goldham, Hall, Harper, Hextall, Kelly, Kennedy, Lindsay, Polonich, Pronovost, Rutherford, Unger and others (a number of players other than Howe have more than 1 signed), 1970s – 42 black and white postcards including Grant, Harper, Bergeron and others, 1973-74 – 31 colour JD McCarthy postcards including 2 signed (Watson and Delvecchio), 1980s – 15 black and white postcards, 1979-80 – 19 thin stock team cards? with 2 signed (Larson and Huber), 1983-84 – 21 team cards including 8 signed with Yzerman (rookie - NOT SIGNED), Duguay (signed), Johnstone (signed), Larson (signed), Ogrodnick (signed) and others, 1984-85 – 27 Little Caesars team cards including 4 signed with Barrett (signed), Burr (signed), Mio (signed) and others, 1985-86 – 34 Little Caesars team cards including 8 signed with Duguay (signed), Probert (signed), Ogrodnick (signed) and others, 1986-87 – 31 Little Caesars team cards including signed with 3 signed (Hanlon, Chiasson and Zombo), 1987-88 – 26 Little Caesars team cards, 1988-89 – 29 Little Caesars team cards, 1988-89 – 20 colour postcards, 1989-90 – 28 Little Caesars team cards including 2 signed, 1990-91 – 36 Little Caesars team cards including 10 signed (Primeau, Dollas, Cheveldae, Green and others), 1991-92 – 31 Little Caesars team cards including 6 signed (Kerr, MacLellan, Miller, Racine and Sheppard), 1992-93 – 14 Little Caesars team cards, 1993-94 – 16 Little Caesars team cards including 1 signed (Konroyd), 1994-95 – 10 Little Caesar team cards, 1995-96 – 27 Little Caesars team cards, 1997-98 – 29 Little Caesars team cards, 1998-99 – 33 Little Caesars team cards, 1999-00 – 31 Little Caesars team cards, 2001-02 – 3 team cards. The misc items include a set of 23 oldtimers team cards (Howe, Delvecchio, Abel, Pronovost and others), a vintage 1940s snapshot of Howe, small photos signed by Dionne and Howe, a Howe Eatons advertising postcard, a Lincoln Mercury Howe card, a Scotty Bowman signed card, additional Howe Eatons postcards and more! The majority of the remaining postcards/team cards in the collection are in beautiful condition with just very light handling wear, with lower technical grades for the older examples.
