Any and all items signed by the legendary Ty Cobb are special and highly sought after, with the demand for the signature of the first Hall of Fame inductee forever trumping the supply. This lot features a handwritten and signed letter from the Georgia Peach dated “5/18/50”, along with the original mailing envelope also scripted in the icon's hand. Addressed to a “Miss Lockhart”, the bulk of the correspondence refers to a photo request, with Cobb stating that he’d be “honored to comply”. The roughly 7 ¼” x 10 ½” letter has been scripted in dark ink on Cobb’s personal letter head, with the Nevada address of his summer residence in Douglas County. An LOA from JSA will accompany.
Exhibiting expected fold lines along with some staining on the reverse from the envelope with the stains visible through the front, the signature remains dark and bold with just the tip of the “y” of “sincerely” encroaching on the second “b” of “Cobb”. The envelope is just under 4” x 7 ½”, and it’s been entirely administered in Cobb’s hand. A postmark stamp of May 18th 1950 is in the upper right along with a three cent stamp, while the reverse features the same Nevada address as the letter. The aforementioned staining on the envelope appears to have originated with the glue used to seal the bottom flap.
