Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020

Entering into the political fray once his Hall of Fame hockey career concluded, Lionel Conacher made his NHL debut with the fabled Pittsburgh Pirates in 1925-26, later spending seasons with the Maroons, Black Hawks and Americans. Named Canada's Greatest Male Athlete of the Half-Century, The Big Train excelled at football as well as hockey, winning a Grey Cup championship with the Argonauts in 1921. Originating from the incomparable autograph collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, we have photo signed by the 1994 HOF inductee. A desirable period Rice image at 7 ½” x 9 ½”, the glossy print pictures Conacher in his Maroons jersey, with the superstar adding a gorgeous and BOLD black ink signature along with a personalization to Hamlyn. Passing in 1954 shortly after his 53rd birthday, this is only the second signed Conacher photo we have ever handled, and the only example signed with his full name.
With no issues for the signature other than mentioning for the strictest accuracy that the very end is a bit light due to the writing instrument, the photo itself shows light wear with a few surface indentations and corner touches, with a small crease over the bottom left corner. A photo credit stamp from Rice appears over the reverse, with typed biographical information regarding Conacher.
