Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020

The first player in professional sports to have his number retired, Irvine “Ace” Bailey shined on a talented Toronto Maple Leafs squad for eight seasons during the late-1920s/early-1930s, winning the NHL scoring race in 1928-29. The Bracebridge native would have his career cut short by a devastating hit by Eddie Shore, which resulted in injury, just two seasons after being crowned a Stanley Cup champion. Originating from the incomparable autograph collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, we have a photo signed by the 1975 HOF inductee. At 6 ½” x 8 ½” and picturing Bailey in a full on-ice pose in his Leafs uniform, a beautiful thin black ink signature has been placed to the left of his image, “with best regards” added. Succumbing to lung cancer at the age of 88 in 1992, we should note that THIS IS ONE OF JUST A FEW VINTAGE-SIGNED ACE BAILEY PHOTOS WE HAVE EVER SEEN/OFFERED.
As mentioned, the signature displays nicely, with just a few somewhat lighter areas due to uneven ink distribution. The glossy print is slightly warped and exhibits a few minor corner creases, along with some toning. There is also paper residue and a handwritten notation over the reverse of “Autographed Aug 30 – 44 on request”, along with a stamp from noted photographer Turofsky.
