Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023

Selected by Montreal 17th overall in 1978, Dave Hunter would never suit up for the club, instead electing to sign with the Edmonton Oilers of the WHA during the leagues final season and stuck with them following their admittance into the NHL for the 1979-80 season and he would win 3 Stanley Cups with the Oilers. Originally part of the Michael Wexler collection that was purchased from the team archives in 1997, we offer this Edmonton Oilers jersey worn by Hunter during the 1985-86 season. Made by Nike, a size “XL” tag is affixed to the inner collar with the brands wordmark and iconic swoosh logo screened over the rear hem at the left side. The mesh garment is decorated over the front with the Oilers familiar oil drop team crest in flight satin, Hunter’s number “12” appears over the sleeves and verso in tri-layer flight satin numerals with “Hunter” spelt out across the affixed matching mesh nameplate in single layer blue flight satin letters. Exhibiting good game-wear, dark stick marks are seen throughout the sleeves and front of the jersey with board burns also found over each sleeve as well as the left shoulder, including on near the right sleeve’s elbow at the top of the orange stripe that has resulted in a small unrepaired hole. Additionally, team repairs totalling 14 by our count are observed over the sleeves and right hip area which also displays an additional board burn. On the interior, a customized snap style fight strap has been sewn in while pilling is found near the team crest and elbows. An included image of Hunter from the 1985-86 season appearing to show the previously mentioned board burn/small unrepaired hole at the top of the orange sleeve stripe near the elbow will be included though it is not clear enough for us to call it a definitive photo-match while another image appears to show the correct placement of the nameplate in correlation with the numbers. An Oilers LOA along with a MeiGray COR will accompany the piece.
