Hockey Memorabilia Auction - Spring 2008

According to Mr. Gillies, this would be the road jersey he wore during the entire 1982 Stanley Cup playoffs including the finals against the Canucks. When Clark Gillies relinquished the Islanders’ captaincy to Denis Potvin prior to the 1979-80 season, the future Hall of Fame left wing made a remarkable and selfless transition from team leader to team enforcer. This magnificent blue mesh jersey exhibits great game wear with solid board burns, clear evidence of Gillies’ work as hockey’s prototypical power forward. Unrepaired cuffs on the sleeves offer testimony to Gillies’ role as the Islanders’ policeman, though as one of hockey’s tougher customers of the day, few opponents were enthusiastic about dropping their gloves to challenge him. The neck features the jersey’s original double Sandow Sporting Knit tagging with No. 9 written in black marker on the Size 52 tag. This one-of-a-kind jersey features great inside pilling and comes with Clark Gillies’ signed letter of authenticity.
