Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023

One of the most important individuals regarding the history of hockey, as a player, official, innovator, coach and general manager, Art Ross developed one of the first nets, he also introduced a puck in 1918 that sported beveled edges, which helped it stay on the ice and not bounce. Before his days as guru of the Boston Bruins, Ross owned a sporting goods store in Montreal on Peel Street, which opened it's doors sometime before 1910 and ran through the late teens. We have an exceedingly rare Art Ross puck most likely sold at his retail store circa 1910. Featuring the sharp edges associated with early pucks before Ross innovated change, "ROSS" is stamped to the top of the puck - with these style stampings the earliest identifiers on rubber slugs. The puck shows wear from use including some white paint transfer along the side, as well as a few minor chips. We should also note that Ross manufactured pucks for the NHL before Spalding, starting in the second season in 1918-19, but we are unable to identify exactly what those pucks looked like. This is most likely the earliest known Art Ross puck in the hobby, and is especially historic. From the Brent Sobie antique hockey and baseball collection.
