Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019

Hockey royalty and one of the formidable brother combinations the NHL has been blessed with throughout it’s existence, Doug and Max Bentley both enjoyed lengthy careers with considerable time spent in The Windy City, with each honoured with Hall of Fame enshrinement during the 1960s. Originally obtained from the Bentley family, we have a Chicago Black Hawks team crest, with this specimen identical to the examples the Hawks sported on team sweaters during both their Stanley Cup championship-season of 1937-38, and also during the follow-up campaign, in 1938-39. At just over 8 ½” in diameter, the black felt crest sits over a thicker white felt base, centered by a slightly embossed chenille red-skinned and yellow-feathered Indian head, with “Chicago” chain-stitched below, and “Black Hawks” above. The white border has also been chain-stitched, with evidence visible of once being affixed to a jersey.
Surviving in gorgeous condition with both the red and yellow colouration remaining bright, just a bit of red bleeding onto the surrounding white background is visible, with all the chain-stitched detailing clean and intact. Doug would first see action with Hawks in 1939-40, staying until 1951-52, with Max appearing for Chicago starting in 1940-41, spending six seasons with the club, with his last in 1946-47. A fraction of the value when compared to a surviving sweater from the era, this rare and possibly unique Black Hawks team crest hailing from the famous Bentley family will augment any advanced collection, and would look stunning framed with a period team photo.
