Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Fresh off a Stanley Cup championship with Charlie Gardiner - who died in the off-season due to a brain hemorrhage, the Chicago Black Hawks acquired Canadiens superstar Howie Morenz in October of 1934. Scoring 34 points in 48 games, Morenz helped the team finish second in the American Division, losing to the Montreal Maroons in the 1934-35 Stanley Cup semifinal. Originating from the personal collection of HOFer Art Coulter who is pictured in the image along with fellow Hall member Morenz, we have a photo of the 1934-35 Chicago Black Hawks. At 11" x 14", the team is pictured in the traditional on-ice pose, including goaltender Lorne Chabot, who was acquired at the beginning of the season along with Morenz. The photo shows heavy wear and is somewhat brittle, with large creases and edge tears along with three missing corners. This is only the second copy of this photo we have ever sold, with the first example framed and in better condition selling for just over $700.00 in 2013.
