This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
The last great bare-knuckle boxing champion, and known throughout the pugilist world of the late-19th century as the "Boston Strong Boy", John L Sullivan bridged the dying era of the London Prize Ring Rules and is recognized as the first heavyweight champion of gloved boxing. Legendary stories abound of his fighting exploits. Produced in 1945 by Bing Crosby Productions and released by United Artists, "The Great John L" tells the story of the famous boxer, with Greg McClure, Rory Calhoun, Linda Darnell and Barbara Britton all starring. This one-sheet movie poster for The Great John L is the 1951 re-release by Astor Pictures. At the standard 27" x 41", McClure is depicted as Sullivan, with a few boxing vignettes. An Astor logo has been placed over the bottom left, with "Released Through Astor Pictures Corp." at the base. The poster exhibits expected fold line and toning, with a few small edge tears.
