With the overwhelming majority long falling to the wrecking ball, we have a massive postcard collection of vintage arenas, rinks and stadiums that total approx 583 and feature the early and past buildings of hockey. Spanning from the early-1900s to the 1990s, highlights include Victoria Rink in Montreal (16 copies with variances, the location of the first Stanley Cup playoff games in 1894), the Houghton Amphidrome (7, with 4 different, Portage Lakes Hockey Club 1904-06), the Hippodrome in Eveleth Minn (4, 3 different, USAHA’s Eveleth Reds 1922-26), Stratford Rink (5 with 3 different, the home of Howie Morenz from the late-1910s to early-1920s), Shawinigan Falls Arena (2 different, home of a young Jacques Plante), Atlantic City Auditorium (3, Atlantic City Seagulls 1933–42, 1947–52), Cleveland Arena (2 different, Cleveland Barons 1937-73), Elysium Arena in Cleveland (6, 4 different, Cleveland Falcons 1936-37) and more.
Additional important venues include Chicago Arena, Eastern States Coliseum (4, Springfield Indians 1926–1932, 1935–1972, New England Whalers 1974–1975), the Hershey Sports Arena (2 different, AHL’s Hershey Bears 1938–2002) and others. Condition within the collection varies, with many postcards displaying especially well with lower technical grades, while others sport expected toning, corner and surface wear along with postmarks and writing. There is also some duplication within the collection, with numerous postcards of the Atlantic City Auditorium.
