Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
The Montreal Canadiens have always had great goaltending, going right back to their roots with Georges Vezina. Nicknamed the Chicoutimi Cucumber for his coolness under pressure, Vezina left a legacy that sees the trophy gifted in his name to the NHL by the Habs awarded to the league’s top goalie every season. Dr. Gustave Gauthier of Chicoutimi also honored Vezina with this commemorative trophy he gifted to Canadiens goalie Gerry McNeil. “Trophee commemoratif Georges Vezina don du Dr. Gustave Gauthier Chicoutimi” is engraved on the front of the bowl, which was most likely gifted for the 1949-50 season when Bill Durnan won the Vezina Trophy and McNeil maintained a 1.50 goals-against-average in six games.
The silver-plated trophy with cleanable tarnish stands about 5 1/4" tall and measures 8” in diameter around the lip of the bowl, which was most likely mounted on a base. The engraved text translates as “Georges Vezina commemorative trophy, donated by Dr. Gustave Gauthier, Chicoutimi.”
