Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
While Babe Ruth signed baseballs are routinely offered at auction, examples combining both an exceptional signature along with an interesting political provenance are rarely seen. We have just that for those collectors and investors enamored by The Babe, with an Official Spalding National League sphere hailing from the presidency of Ford Frick. Ruth has signed in steel-tip fountain pen within a panel, and the signature is gorgeous and fairly bold, with just a few lighter areas including the bottom of the “E” and top of the “R”. An accompanying letter states that the ball along with others was originally signed by Ruth to be given to donors at a dinner for Indiana Governor Ralph F Gates, with this example given to a Dale Miller, with a panel featuring “To Dale Miller”, along with a lengthy and blurred inscription from Gates. A JSA LOA will accompany this unique Ruth artifact.
According to the accompanying letter, the now blurred inscription from Gates reads “To my friend Dale Miller, Ralph F Gates, Gov of Ind”. The ball itself is cream-coloured off-white, with no obtrusive staining or wear, with the Ruth panel clean. Also included with the ball is the original Spalding box (poor condition with detached flaps and no lid), an 8” x 10” sepia photo and a “Signature Bat” mini bat with display stand and bat card (No 23113 of 25,000).
