Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
Considered action figures despite the packaging moniker of “dolls”, we have a pair representing ice legends Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky, with an Orr Regal doll from the 1970s and a Gretzky “99” doll from 1983 by Matell, with both in their original packaging. The plastic packaging housing the Orr doll is torn along the bottom under Orr’s left skate, and it has lifted away along most of the bottom edge and lower left portion of the 13” x 8” cardboard backing, which features the Bruins’ great pictured in action. It also has a smaller tear on the top, where it has also lifted away from the cardboard backing, which has a one-inch vertical tear through the third “B” in Orr’s name. A loose black thread hangs down from the right pant leg. All items except the puck are present, including his stick and both gloves, with the left one falling off at some point and positioned along the bottom. With a slight curvature and a tad dusty/grubby package, it’s a piece that should be in the hands of all serious Orr collectors. The Gretzky doll and its contents appear complete, with Wayne pictured all smiles along the lower right portion of the box front. With toning and some creasing in spots, the box remains in very good condition, with some minor dirt and staining to the plastic/cellophane. Rarely offered as a pair, these “dolls” will be perfect for any collector seeking displayable examples.
