Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/3/2015
One of the most desirable jerseys from one of the most memorable international hockey tournaments, this red Team Canada jersey was donned by the legendary Bobby Hull as he helped lead Canada to the 1976 Canada Cup championship. Canada assembled arguably its greatest team ever for the inaugural competition and for younger fans who hadn't seen Hull in his heyday with the Black Hawks or with the Jets because of lack of WHA television coverage, it was a chance for them to discover one of hockey's all-time greats. Bobby led Canada with 5 goals, 3 of them game-winners, while most of the time forming a potent line with Gilbert Perreault and Marcel Dionne. Hull's red knit jersey which he wore notably in the 3-1 victory over the Soviets (Bobby scored what proved to be the winner) in the last round-robin game and in the first game of the finals against Czechoslovakia has an "AK" company tag in the neck that indicates size 46. The Team Canada logo on the front, the maple leaves on the sleeves, the numbers and "HULL" across the back are all screened-on. Bobby's assistant captain's "A" however is in red and white nylon and sewn-on. The sweater shows nice game use with marks and general filth in the white half maple leaf on the front, a few black marks and stains in the red below and a quarter-size stain in the tip of the front logo, parallel with the "A". There's a nice 1-inch board burn and small resulting hole on the upper right sleeve, to the right of the tip of the maple leaf and close to the seam, while a tiny hole can be spotted on the left sleeve, just under the "9". There's also a small hole at the top of the "U" in "HULL". The jersey originally came from a close personal friend of Denis Potvin who received it as a gift from Potvin on the night that Canada clinched the tournament championship on Darryl Sittler's overtime winner. Team Canada wore their white sweaters that night and later traded them with the Czechs in a memorable exchange. Following post-game festivities, Potvin's friend met Dennis outside the dressing room but before exiting the Montreal Forum, Potvin decided to return to the dressing room and retrieve his other (red) jersey. Potvin brought his friend in with him and when grabbing his own sweater, asked his buddy if he would like one. A random pick produced this Hull jersey! A sensational memento from an unforgettable competition with a remarkable story behind it, this outstanding jersey will come with a Classic Auctions letter of authenticity. Please take note that this lot may be subject to a silent reserve.
