Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Fall 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/20/2022
Joining the club for their inaugural season of 1972-73, Bob Whidden would backstop the Cleveland Crusaders in over 20 games in each of his four seasons with the club, ultimately falling out of the league when the Crusaders folded after the 1975-76 season. Hailing from his time in Cleveland is this mask worn by Whidden. At approx 10” from the top of the reverse to the bottom of the chin, the mask features a deep purple and cream sunburst design with metal flake. Void of any strapping or backplate, all the foam padding remains present in the interior of the mask. Heavy game-use is shown with surface wear throughout including chipping, blemishes and puck marks, with the interior padding also showing moderate wear through sweat staining. It should be noted that it appears as though a wide strip of white athletic tape has been removed from the eye area, leaving tape residue and that there are cracks found on the underside of the chin and forehead area although it does not affect the structural integrity of this beautiful piece.
