Bob Johnson’s Denver Spurs game-worn away dureen jersey features a spectacular team crest and is from the second set of WHA gamers worn by the ill-fated Colorado franchise during their first and only season in the rebel league. The players wore recycled jerseys from the CHL 1974-75 Spurs at the beginning of the season and later switched to these jerseys until the franchise folded for good later that season after a two-game stint as the Ottawa Civics.
The sweater has Wilson (size 50) and BH Sport and Team Center Inc. tags affixed to the collar of the garment which doesn’t have a fight strap. The layered tackle twill team crest features embroidered details and some of the stitching has let go in the upper area of said crest most likely due to the puckering exhibited. The sleeves and back of the sweater have two-tone tackle twill number "1" and a definitive treat is the all original nameplate on the upper back, a rare occurrence with only this away example, and a home example, known to have their original nameplates. Retaining its rich colouration and vibrancy with all material remaining supple, there is the aforementioned puckering to the team crest with a few “wrinkles” present, with dark marks over the lower front and right elbow. There is also a bit of spot staining over the collar label, with heavy staining repeated on the upper reverse - possibly paint residue - including over sections of the nameplate and number (it is possible that the staining specifically over just the reverse "1" is from mold). Overall, the sweater shows nice use and displays beautifully.
The Denver/Ottawa franchise existed for merely 41 games as a WHA franchise, making them the shortest lived franchise in WHA history. A pair of 8 ½" x 11" photos showing Johnson in game action is also included with the sweater which is destined to be an instant centerpiece in any WHA collection!
