Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - March 2007
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/27/2007
Worn by a man who was once referred to by Soviet coach Victor Tikhonov as the best player in the world from a technical point of view, Bob Gainey’s red mesh Team Canada jersey that the Hall-of-Famer wore in the ’81 Canada Cup tournament is by Sandow with a size “48” added in ballpoint to the company tag in the neck. Everything is screened-on including “Gainey” directly across the back (no nameplate), with the exception of Bob’s nylon alternate captain’s “A”. With a loop-style fight strap, the jersey features a trio of good board burns on each sleeve, a couple of more small ones near the back hem, and a pair at the left shoulder. Some red paint transfer in the white of the big Team Canada logo, which includes minor light cracking, is also of note. The great two-way player contributed a goal and three assists in seven tournament games in ’81, after having been one of the Montreal Canadiens’ important leaders during their four Stanley Cup run in the late-1970s. The memory of Gainey tearing down the left side before nailing an opponent into the boards is still a vivid one for those who witnessed him in his heyday. A LOA signed by Alan Eagleson will be included with this formidable international jersey.
