The Toronto Blue Jays became Canada’s first World Series champions in 1992. Anchored by second baseman Roberto Alomar and the leadership of fellow HOFer Dave Winfield, the Jays beat Oakland in the ALCS and then took out the Atlanta Braves in six games for their first of two straight World Series titles. This magnificent personal 1992 Blue Jays Commissioner’s Trophy was awarded to Bob Didier, who was Toronto’s minor-league catching instructor in 1991-1992 and 2000. “World Series Champions Toronto Blue Jays 1992 Bob Didier” is spelled out on the front of the gold plaque that encircles the round base, which stands 2 1/2" tall and has a Balfour sticker on the bottom. The names of the 26 Major League Baseball teams in 1992 fly on the flags atop the poles that encircle the baseball anchored and crown-adorned oversized gold ring in the middle. Blue Jays and Braves World Series pins are displayed in the foreground of this wonderful trophy commemorating Toronto’s first championship.
There is some wear to the lettering on the team names on the flags, including the “e” missing in “Baltimore”, and some wear to the flags themselves. The San Francisco Giants flag is detached from its flagpole but included.
Didier was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the fourth round of the 1967 amateur draft. He reached the majors as a 20-year-old in 1969 and was a regular for the Braves' division-winning club that season. After six seasons in the majors, he played for the Iowa Oaks in 1975, was a player/coach for the Richmond Braves in 1976, and managed a number of minor league teams from 1977-83. He coached in Oakland from 1984-86, managed the Tucson Toros in 1987-88, and was the Seattle Mariners’ third base coach in for two seasons before joining the Blue Jays. He was an advance scout with the New York Yankees advance scout in 1997-99 and 2001, and the Chicago Cubs from 2003-05. After spending two years as Arizona’s minor league catching coordinator, he managed the Yakima Bears in 2008.
