This exquisite diamond and gold ring was presented to Hall of Fame goalie Billy Smith to commemorate the New York Islanders' second straight Stanley Cup win in the spring of 1981. Battlin’ Billy went 14-3 with a 2.54 GAA in the playoffs after posting a 22-10-8 mark during the regular season. The Islanders defended their title by taking 11 of 13 games in series wins through the first three rounds over Toronto, Edmonton and the New York Rangers before dispatching Minnesota in a five-game final. The size 10 ring weighs approximately 30 grams. Two large diamonds are displayed on the tableau, set in a brilliant blue stone representing the first two of the Islanders' four straight titles in the early-1980s. "Stanley Cup Champions 1981" is proclaimed in raised solid gold lettering on the outer edge of the bezel, while "New York" and "Islanders" are cleverly spelled out in smaller raised gold letters on the inner top and bottom edges of the bezel. The left shank has "Smith" in raised letters with an enamel-painted Islanders logo beneath it and Smith’s number "31" in raised gold at the bottom. The right shank features a stylized image of the Stanley Cup trophy with the outline of the NHL shield behind in relief, with "NHL League Champions" in tiny raised letters within a shield at the bottom. "Balfour" is stamped inside the size 10 band along with a "10K" stamp that is mostly erased. Beautifully preserved with sharp details, proud wear shows in a few nicks to the inner edge of the left shank to the right of “31” and scratches from to the 10-karat gold band. Comes with Billy Smith’s signed LOA. Please note that this lot may be subject to a silent reserve.
